Meet-the-Artists Reception (Brother Joseph McNally Gallery)

Ana Estrada, Okui Lala, and Nasrikah reflect on Reimagining the Workplace (2024), a collaborative performance developed with aged care workers across Malaysia and Australia. In this conversation, they discuss how listening informed their collaborative methods, the writing of a co-authored script, ethical questions around representation, and the challenges of navigating institutional relationships in both care and art contexts. The artists will present their work online via Zoom. International audiences are welcome to participate. Zoom link will be sent to attendees via email.

Rachel Chen’s formal training in music initially informed the designs of her interactive environments. However, after over a decade of engaging with the non-speaking autistic community, her understanding of musicality and sensory touch has expanded in unexpected ways. She will discuss how her learnings have enriched her research and designs of the Magical Music Mat, which are tailored to the sonic preferences of the non-speaking autistic individuals. She will highlight the impact her research has had on supporting new avenues for communication between autistic individuals with their parents and educators.

Isabelle Lim and Grace Lee-Khoo discuss the process, challenges and insights gained from developing this pilot photography experience, Silent Studio which focuses on the nuances of Deaf Culture and non-speaking communication. Architect Benedict Tay reflects on his creative decisions around spatial design for accessibility and engagement of diverse audiences in the project.

For The Listening Biennial, Third Edition, Chong Li-Chuan made a soundscape composition entitled "On Any Given Day". It is an 8.5-minute stereo piece created from field recordings made at Hong Lim Complex in Singapore. The work is a meditation on the site’s layered history, specifically its role during the Japanese Occupation in 1942. The piece positions listening as an act of remembrance and woven into the soundscape is a personal thread: the story of Li-Chuan’s grandfather’s improbable escape from death during Sook Ching. Li-Chuan will share excerpts from an interview with his late grandparents, in which his grandfather recounted this realization. The interview was conducted in Cantonese, and English subtitles will accompany the audio. The session will also offer insight into the compositional process and conceptual framing behind "On Any Given Day", exploring how sound, listening, memory, and place converge.

Diancong Liu and Zihao Wong of Superlative Futures reflect on New Practices for Tidal Attuning (2025), a site-based performance of alternative landscape stories speculating a different ecological tempo in the city—of fluxing tides, weathering monsoons, watery histories, and (still) wetter futures. They discuss how their search for the sound of the tides informed a different imagination of new urban practices on slowing down to weathering time and other landscape rhythms. They will also reflect on listening as a haptic means to creative site-making—an extension to their counter-cartographic practice of landscape representation.
