Opening Reception, EAT THE STICKY MACHINE: Interference

Founded in 2004 by Yeo Shih Yun, INSTINC is an artist-run institution based in Singapore. INSTINC has been an active player in the arts ecology through their exhibition programming and curation, as well as through community engagement through their workshops and artists’  talks. They continue to build upon regional and international ties through their long-running residency program. The vision for INSTINC is one of collaboration and connection, producing immersive large-scale projects that cross the genres of installation, new media, performance, painting and sculpture, partnering with brands such as Volvo and Guinness in the past.

This July, INSTINC revisits EAT THE STICKY MACHINE, the exhibition first presented in Bangkok in 2019 by Justin Lee, Yeoh Wee Hwee, and Yeo Shih Yun, through a new and altered framework titled EAT THE STICKY MACHINE: Interference.Rather than a straightforward restaging, this iteration returns to the original exhibition as a point of departure. Joining the project are invited artists Andy Yang, Ezzam Rahman, and Joo Choon Lin, whose works enter into conversation with the exhibition's existing ideas and structures. Their contributions act as forms of interference, introducing new perspectives that both respond to and complicate the concerns explored in the original presentation.The title Interference refers to moments of interruption and interaction. By placing new works alongside the existing framework, the exhibition creates opportunities for unexpected connections and shifts in meaning. Questions around consumption, materiality, and automation remain present, but are approached through fresh encounters that invite reconsideration rather than resolution.In revisiting a project from seven years ago, EAT THE STICKY MACHINE: Interference is less concerned with looking back than with testing how an exhibition can continue to evolve over time. The exhibition treats interference not as an obstacle, but as a generative condition through which new relationships and readings can emerge.
