If it has been a while — or if you have always been curious about what it feels like to play inside an orchestra — this afternoon is for you. On Saturday, 18 July, Toa Payoh Guitar Club opens its rehearsal room to the public for Play Together: a free, informal afternoon of live music, a real ensemble masterclass, and a chance to pick up your guitar and join the orchestra on stage. No audition. No prior ensemble experience. Just turn up, listen, learn, and play. What’s on The afternoon is built around three simple ideas: watch, learn, and play. You will watch TPGC perform live — including a piece they have just learnt, presented as a work in progress. Then guest clinician Patrick Lui takes over, coaching the ensemble on stage in real time. This is not a polished concert. It is an unfiltered look at how an experienced musician listens to an ensemble and helps it grow — the kind of session most people never get to see. Patrick will also perform two solo pieces by Joaquín Rodrigo, and at 4:30pm he opens the floor for questions. Technique, expression, stage nerves, practice habits — bring whatever is on your mind. You can even submit your question in advance at: https://forms.gle/5HKVWzy8rwTZ5Dew9 Then at 4:50pm, it is your turn. Bring your guitar and join TPGC on stage for a short play-along. Sheet music will be provided. TPGC members will be right beside you. You do not need to be good — you just need to show up. Don’t play guitar? You are equally welcome. Come and watch, listen, and soak up the afternoon. About Patrick Lui Patrick Lui is a masterful concert artist and distinguished classical guitar teacher with over four decades of experience. His students have performed at Carnegie Hall and won awards at the Guitar Festival America, the James Stroud Guitar Competition, and other prestigious international competitions. Many have gone on to become professional performers — and one is a Grammy Award-winning music producer. From 2005 to 2024, Patrick served as Director of Guitar Studies at Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts in the United States. His playing has been praised for its “virtuosity but also a lyric beauty and silky smoothness.” About Toa Payoh Guitar Club Established in 1974, TPGC is Singapore’s oldest guitar orchestra. The club performs using the Niibori guitar family — a distinctive ensemble format that achieves the rich, layered sound of a full orchestra entirely on guitars. TPGC welcomes members of all ages and backgrounds.
