What happens when a landscape becomes an abstraction? When colour becomes the subject rather than a description of nature? And when a painting that looks spontaneous reveals a carefully constructed visual language?This talk offers a close visual reading of the paintings of Myanmar artist Than Htay (b. 1958, Yangon), examining how he moves between lyrical landscapes, fragmented imagery, geometric abstraction and gestural painting. Through a selection of works, we will look at his use of colour, composition, texture, gesture and spatial structure—and consider what connects works that, at first glance, appear radically different.Rather than tracing a chronological biography, the talk asks a more fundamental question: what makes a Than Htay painting recognisable? The answer may lie not in a particular subject or technique, but in his persistent exploration of colour as a means of transforming landscape, memory and visual experience.
