About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Explore Geylang beyond its nightlife! This guided morning walk uncovers the district’s fascinating past, from historic shophouses and hidden temples to clan associations and the remnants of its red-light legacy. Discover the stories behind one of Singapore’s most misunderstood neighborhoods.

Start at Aljunied MRT (Exit A) – Gateway to Geylang

Meet at Aljunied MRT (Exit A) and step into Geylang, a district once filled with coconut plantations, now known for its mix of heritage, trade, and vice. Hear how the area evolved from a simple settlement into one of Singapore’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

Lorong 24A – Shophouse Architecture & Community Stories

Wander down Lorong 24A, where well-preserved pre-war shophouses display a mix of Peranakan, Chinese, and Art Deco influences. Learn how these heritage buildings housed early migrant communities, businesses, and even secret societies.

The Hidden Clan Associations

Peek inside Geylang’s traditional clan associations such as Char Yong (Dabu) Assocation, Singapore, which played a key role in helping early Chinese immigrants settle in Singapore. Some still operate today, offering a glimpse into old customs, ancestral worship, and forgotten trades.

Geylang’s Red-Light Day & Night

Did you know that Geylang is Singapore’s only legal red-light district? While the neon signs come alive at night, the area holds fascinating stories of opium dens, gambling houses, and underground businesses from the past. Discover how Geylang continues to balance law, culture, and commerce in a way that no other district does.

The Hidden Temples of Geylang

Beyond its busy streets, Geylang is home to century-old Taoist and Buddhist temples. Visit Leong Nam Temple, a lesser-known but historically rich place of worship, where age-old rituals are still practiced today.

The “Even vs. Odd” Geylang Rule

Ever wondered why Geylang’s odd-numbered lorongs feel different from the even-numbered ones? Learn about the district’s unique planning—where one side is more residential, while the other has long been associated with nightlife and entertainment.
