About this event

Cuturi Gallery is delighted to present Tea Time by French artist Gaël Davrinche (b. 1971). In this new series of paintings, Davrinche invites viewers to pause, linger, and engage his works with fresh eyes, journeying beyond the surface of the visible. For Davrinche, the true essence of his art lies not in the immediate apparent but in the quiet revelations that emerge through time and contemplation.

In the past, Davrinche’s subjects were more recognisable, often reminiscent of 'Corpus Botanica,' a thematic collection that he meticulously developed over the years to explore the world of plants, flowers, and nature. Yet, these recognisable forms are gradually receding, offering viewers greater freedom to engage with the work on a more personal level. With this shift, Davrinche invites us to let our imaginations roam, embrace daydreams, question traditional representation, and experience painting beyond its literal subject.

Gaël Davrinche is a contemporary artist whose practice delves into the history and traditions of academic painting while exploring its figurative dimension. His floral paintings are both a testament to technical mastery and a poignant reminder of how the still life genre, particularly floral works, has long served as a means of escape and a pretext for artistic expression. The vibrant bursts of colour and expressive brushstrokes in his flowers evoke a sense of jubilation, a celebration that resonates with both the artist and the viewer. Beyond their visual appeal, these blossoms reflect the rhythms of nature and the change of the seasons.

Tea Time further unfolds Davrinche’s exploration, inviting us to experience the inherent pleasure of painting. Through his art, Davrinche suggests that florals might be the perfect motif for art, rooted in the passionate nature of romanticism. His approach, however, evokes a sense of pause, a space for reflection, and an invitation to give free rein to daydreaming.

Tea Time will be on view at Cuturi Gallery from 11 January – 8 February 2025.
