The Awesome Peranakan Experience - Bead by Bead

Be immersed in the Peranakan culture by spending a weekend at the Peranakan Mansion @ Joo Chiat heritage district.

Guest will (1) gain understanding of the Peranakan heritage and culture, (2) learn skills on Peranakan beading, (3) get dressed in Peranakan Kebayas/Batik Shirt to take lovely photos, (4) enjoy Peranakan kuehs and tea, and (5) be soaked in the ambience of the beautifully decorated Peranakan Chinese Museum.

Understanding The Peranakan Culture & Heritage: Once you step into the Peranakan Mansion, it is like taking a step back in time into a different time dimension – ~100 years into a 1928 Peranakan home when these architecturally stunning shophouses were constructed in Joo Chiat. Guests are welcomed by a captivating ambience, followed by a feast for their eyes where they will be tickled with stories behind them. The place provides fascinating insights into the development of this unique culture and heritage that infuses Colonial, Chinese and Malay influences into their living spaces, furniture, deco, art, tapestry, kitchen wares, dressing, and more.

Art of Peranakan Bead & Needle Work: Create your own Beaded Artwork (technique of making Kasut Manek) Learn about the origins and intricate craft forms of Nyonya beadwork where one can find them in decorations for everyday Peranakan personal items, as well as more ornamental pieces for special occasions. Learn the traditional stitching technique and create your personal artwork using beautiful glass beads and tools that are provided. We will guide you along and make sure you bring home an art work to be proud. Don’t forget to bring along your reading glasses/contact lenses!

Guests can stay on after workshop to perfect their masterpiece or just gossip over tea with new friends. Afterall, (one of) Peranakan Mansion's main purpose is to enrich lives, knowledge and memories.

Delve into the cultural roots with Chinese or Peranakan pre-wedding photoshoot wearing traditional wedding Kua or Baju Kebaya with the grand location to capture the moment for keeps of a lifetime.

Experiential Private Dining. Visitors craving more for a complete experience can pre-book a private dining session at Straits Enclave. Preserving the authenticity of each dish is key to how Straits Enclave’s Chef teleports guests to the time when he/Chef fondly remembers these dishes growing up. Our in-house chef will take you on a gastronomical journey with authentic Peranakan or Western cuisines, special desserts and beverages from past generations’ secret recipes. Arrive early to indulge in pre-diner cocktail Nyonya style, and for a photo tour around the fascinating and charming/captivating Straits Enclave. Guests are given the chance to create their plate of Kueh Pie Tee and bowl of Laksa. Straits Enclave presents/promises an engaging, enriching and hearty experience. The Straits Enclave can host up to 16 comfortably seated guests.
