Prepare for an exciting night of stories and friendly competition at What’s Your Story Slam! This is where everyday people step up to the mic to share their personal, five- to six-minute tales, competing to win the audience’s votes.

What to Expect:

  • Storytelling Competition: Each storyteller will have a few minutes to wow you with their story. You’ll hear everything from heartfelt moments to hilarious anecdotes.
  • Audience Voting: As part of the audience, you’ll vote for your top three favourite stories of the night. The storyteller with the most votes takes home the win!
  • Fun, Welcoming Vibe: Whether you’re here to compete, support a friend, or enjoy a night out, our Story Slam community is warm, inclusive, and energetic.

Come for the stories, stay for the connections. Grab a drink, sit back, and cheer on the night’s storytellers. We can’t wait to see you there!

This Month's Theme: IN HONOUR OF HER

Share your story about a woman who left a mark on your life. Tell us about a time her strength lifted you up, her kindness changed you, or her wisdom opened your eyes.

That moment she showed up, stood tall, or simply listened. Recall the quiet moments, the big gestures, the words that have stayed with you. Tell us a story that honours her, a story that brings her impact to life.

Other Prompts:

Tell us about...

…a time her courage inspired you

…a moment her advice made all the difference

…a time she taught you something unforgettable

How it Works

What’s Your Story Slam is a curated storytelling competition that brings together passionate storytellers, each coached by our creative director, Anna Ong. Every participant pitches their story idea to Anna at least a month before the show, allowing time to craft a compelling, engaging narrative.

On the night, each storyteller takes the stage with a polished, unforgettable 5-6 minute tale, ready to wow the audience and compete for the top spot. It’s a unique, immersive storytelling experience designed to leave a lasting impression.

Tips for Live Storytelling

  • It’s Your Story
Make sure you’re one of the main characters and were part of the events as they unfolded. No journalism—this is personal storytelling.
  • Told, Not Read
What’s Your Story Slam is all about connection, so no notes or scripts on stage. Know your story by “heart” so you can engage directly with the audience.
  • Stakes Matter
Why does this story matter to you? What's at risk? Make us care and root for you! If there are no stakes, consider choosing a different story.

How to Bring Your Story to Life

  • Start with Action
Hook us with a bold opening line!
No: “I thought about signing up for a marathon…”
Yes: “I’m freezing in Shinjuku, surrounded by spandex, waiting for my first marathon to start…”
  • Know Your Story, Have Fun!
Memorise your bullet points, then let loose. Tell it like you’re at a dinner party with friends.

What to Avoid

  • No Meandering Endings
Know your last line before you start. Bring your audience along for the ride—don’t leave them lost!
  • No Sales or Motivational Speeches
This isn’t a pitch or a seminar. We want real, relatable stories, not life lessons.
  • No Stand-Up Routines
Funny is great, but tell funny stories—no punchline-driven routines.
  • No Poetry or Essays
Save written reflections for the page. Stories need action, stakes, and heart.
  • No Rants
Stories need resolution, not unresolved frustration. Share stories you’ve processed and moved through.
  • NO Key Takeaways
Let the audience find their own meaning. Avoid summarising or “teaching” at the end.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is What’s Your Story Slam?

What’s Your Story Slam is a live storytelling competition where everyday people share personal, 5-6 minute stories. It’s a night of real, raw, and often funny or heartfelt stories told directly from the heart—no notes, no scripts.

2. Who can attend?

3. How can I sign up to tell a story?

If you’re interested in being a storyteller, apply here: https://bit.ly/WYSS2025SG. Each storyteller must pitch their story idea at least a month before the event. Anna Ong, our creative director, will work with you to shape it into a compelling performance.

4. What kind of stories do you accept?

Stories must be personal and true, with you as one of the main characters. They should have stakes—something to win, lose, or learn—and avoid anything journalistic or scripted. Check our “Storytelling Tips” for more details.

5. Do I need to memorise my story?

Yes! We encourage storytellers to be deeply familiar with their story rather than reading from notes or a script. The goal is to connect with the audience directly.

6. Can I tell a story if I’ve never performed before?

Absolutely! We welcome everyone, from first-timers to seasoned storytellers. Anna provides coaching for each selected storyteller to help them feel confident and ready for the stage.

7. How are winners chosen?

The audience votes for their top three favourite stories of the night. The storyteller with the most votes at the end wins!

8. Is there a theme for each event?

Yes, each month’s event has a unique theme (e.g., In Honour of Her, Plot Twist, The Great Escape). The theme helps guide the stories but is open to interpretation.

9. What should I avoid in my story?

Avoid motivational speeches, stand-up routines, rants, or pitches. We’re looking for real, engaging stories with heart. Please also avoid key takeaways—let the audience find their own meaning.

10. Do I need to have my story reviewed by someone?

Yes, all stories are reviewed by Anna Ong, who helps refine each one for the event. This ensures that every story is engaging and fits the spirit of What’s Your Story Slam.

11. Can I bring friends and family to support me?

Of course! We encourage storytellers to bring their own cheering section. The more, the merrier!

12. What if I just want to attend as an audience member?

Perfect! Audience members are essential—they set the energy and help choose the winner. Grab a ticket, sit back, and enjoy the show.

13. What makes What’s Your Story Slam different from a comedy or poetry night?

What’s Your Story Slam is focused on authentic, personal storytelling rather than scripted or performed content. Each story is true, personal, and deeply engaging, making for a unique experience.

Each storyteller is encouraged to keep their story to 5-6 minutes. If a story goes longer, a gentle time cue will be given to wrap it up.
